Kansas Guard Shakeel Moore sidelined for 6-8 weeks due to broken foot

Kansas Guard Shakeel Moore Out 6-8 Weeks With Broken Foot

Kansas guard Shakeel Moore is facing an extended absence of up to eight weeks after breaking his foot in a pickup game. This setback comes as the Jayhawks are already dealing with the loss of guard Elmarko Jackson due to a knee injury. Moore, a fifth-year senior transfer, is expected to make a comeback around the beginning of the regular season.

Fifth-year senior guard Shakeel Moore will not participate in Kansas Basketball Boot Camp drills

Coach Bill Self shared, “He’ll be out for an extended period of time. He underwent surgery two weeks ago. While we do not have a precise timeline for his return, he will miss the initial phase of our regular practice in late September. We are hopeful to have him back for the start of the season, but it may be closer to that time frame.”

“The surgery was successful, and a speedy recovery is anticipated, albeit one that will keep him out for approximately six to eight weeks.”

Moore will be sitting out KU Basketball Boot Camp drills, commencing on Tuesday and lasting through the following week.

Throughout 124 career NCAA regular-season games (68 starts) over four seasons spanning from 2020 to 2024, Moore has maintained averages of 8.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 24.5 minutes per game. He has shot 42.4% from the field, 31.2% from beyond the arc, and 70.7% from the free-throw line.

After starting his collegiate journey at NC State, Moore transferred to Mississippi State, where he posted 7.9 points per game last season. In 32 games (15 starts) during the 2021-22 season with the Bulldogs, he enjoyed career highs of 9.8 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.

During that same season in the SEC, he ranked among the top players in various defensive categories. Additionally, Moore’s scoring output has been crucial for Mississippi State and NC State, as the teams combined for a record of 30-15 when he scored at least 10 points.

Standing at 6-foot-1, Moore contributed 7.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game last season with Mississippi State. He recorded double-digit scoring in 13 games, with his best performance being a 16-point game against Murray State on Dec. 13, 2023.

The Bulldogs and Wolfpack saw success when Moore reached the 10-point mark, with a combined record of 30-15 in such games. Moore also displayed his defensive prowess with multiple steals in 41 out of 99 games played with the Bulldogs.

Following Jackson’s injury, Moore made the decision to commit to Kansas, where Coach Self is preparing for the upcoming season with a mix of returning veterans and new transfers. Notable additions to the team include guards AJ Storr from Wisconsin, Rylan Griffen from Alabama, Zeke Mayo from South Dakota State, David Coit from Northern Illinois, and Noah Shelby from Rice. Key returnees in the frontcourt include second-team All-American Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams Jr.
