The 16 players to enter Wimbledon’s main draw as qualifiers were determined at Roehampton on Thursday, and, of the 3 Britons in contention, only Sonay Kartal proved successful with an impressive 6-3 6-1 over 5th-seeded Erica Andreeva.
15-year-old Hannah Klugman, who was hoping to become Britain’s youngest-ever qualifier for The Championships, lost her 3rd-round match to American Alycia Parks, 6-3 6-3.
Meanwhile, Amarni Banks was overpowered by 19-year-old Marina Stakusic from Canada, 6-3 6-0.
Sonay Kartal was the only British woman to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon.
Kartal beat Erica Andreeva to reach Wimbledon for the third time. Kartal, a 22-year-old Brighton, is a hard-hitter who won her 3rd title of the season in May and put everything on the line to complete a dream week on the grass against Andreeva.
Ranked 295, Kartal overcame 3 players sitting inside the Top 200 before securing her highest ranked win against the World No 99.
Kartal constructed a comfortable 4-1 lead in the first set, capitalizing on her opponent’s rising number of unforced errors to edge ahead. Andreeva found her first break point of the match but Kartal soon responded, winning the set before losing only 10 points in the second to triumph in one hour and 14 minutes.
Four American women took the court at Roehampton on Thursday, led by top seed Katie Volynets, who saved her most emphatic performance for last as she stormed past Talia Gibson from Australia, 6-0 6-1, in just 50 minutes.
A day after surviving in a deciding 10-point match tiebreak, Robin Montgomery pulled away from Valentina Ryser from Switzerland, 7-6(3) 6-2.
