Kenin Secures First Tour-Level Victory of the Year in Rain-Delayed Italian Open Match

Sofia Kenin won a WTA Tour-level match again at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome for the first time since January, beating Lucia Bronzetti.

Kenin recently won a match again, but that wasn’t on the top WTA level. It was on the lower level, but it was memorable nonetheless because it was the first time since January of this year that she had won a match again.

She lost nine matches in a row before winning that match, failing to really find her best tennis. Oddly enough, she did find a good level in doubles but never singles.

She found her best on the WTA Tour-level in her first-round match in Rome against native player Lucia Bronzetti. It was not an easy match for the American, who was playing a local player at the Italian Open, but she handled it really well.

The match was postponed midway through due to rain, but she wasn’t really bothered by any of that. To be fair, the start was shaky, and Bronzetti jumped out to an early lead, but that 3-1 lead quickly turned into a 3-5 deficit as Kenin would finish off the opening set, winning it 6-3.

The second set was quite similar. There was fighting in those early games of the second set, but after that, Kenin was able to find her best tennis and quickly finish off the match.

The final score was 6-3, 6-2 for Kenin, who did really well in this match to finally win again on the WTA Tour-level, and on top of that, a WTA 1000 level. It’s been a long struggle for her, but she’s finding something on clay in recent weeks.

That’s two wins in two weeks, and hopefully, she can now build upon that. Rome hasn’t always been the best spot for her, but things can change.
