Kenin’s Losing Streak Continues as She Suffers Another Defeat in Madrid, Extending to 9 Matches

Sofia Kenin has been struggling in her tennis performance recently, as evidenced by her ninth consecutive loss at the 2024 Madrid Open.

Kenin demonstrated strong play prior to the start of the 2024 season by winning the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi. However, her form took a downturn early in the year despite initial promising results.

Her losing streak began several weeks into the season and has persisted since then, with no victories on the WTA Tour for several months.

Kenin’s last victory on the WTA Tour dates back to January 9th, 2024, making it almost four months since her last win. With a current record of 1-10 for the year, her ninth consecutive loss at the Madrid Open adds to her struggles.

This extended losing streak is unprecedented for Kenin, who has never experienced such a run of defeats in her career. Despite the challenges, the primary reason for her losses boils down to not performing well enough to secure wins.

The match in Madrid pitted Kenin against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, a seasoned clay player. Schmiedlova emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-4, showcasing a slightly better performance than Kenin.

While the first set ended 6-3 in Schmiedlova’s favor, Kenin missed crucial opportunities to break. The second set was more closely contested, but Schmiedlova’s consistency paid off, leading to her victory.

Schmiedlova capitalized on her opportunities, breaking Kenin twice in the second set, ultimately securing the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
