Wednesday’s action at the BNP Paribas Open saw former world No. 1 and three-time Major winner Angelique Kerber record a first-round victory, defeating Petra Martic 6-3, 6-4.

Kerber, who is currently ranked No. 607 in world, will next face No. 10 seed Jelena Ostapenko for a place in round three.

Elsewhere, Marie Bouzkova, Tatjana Maria and Rebecca Sramkova all reached the second round.

On the men’s side, Thanasi Kokkinakis moved into the second-round, dismissing American Marcus Giron 6-3, 7-5. The Australian will take on No. 3 seed Jannik Sinner in the next round.

Sinner has started 2024 with a 12-0 record.

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray easily dispatched David Goffin 6-3, 6-2 in 81 minutes. The Scot will have a stern challenge in the next round, with No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev waiting.

Elsewhere, Christopher O’Connell, Brandon Nakashima and Alexander Shevchenko also reached the round of 64.

Tuesday’s schedule of play will feature the return of Rafael Nadal to the Tennis Garden. The Spaniard will face Milos Raonic in a block-buster, first-round match.
