Kevin Durant could return to the SuperSonics if Seattle gets its team back in the coming years, according to Hall of Famer and former Sonic Spencer Haywood.
“Me and Durant are still talking about Seattle,” Haywood told HoopsHype. “We talked about it at the All-Star game [this year]. I can’t go any further – there’s some sneaky stuff going on that I can’t talk about because it’s private.
“But I wouldn’t be surprised if I see him in a Sonics uniform [again]. I was with his mother at the All-Star game – with him and his mother, everybody. I’m just saying.”
Haywood’s comments closely followed Durant saying on a Boardroom podcast that it would be a “dream come true” to help run the Sonics in retirement. But he stopped short of saying anything about suiting up for the team.
Of course, if Durant did want to play for the Sonics, the first step would be Seattle getting their team back. The Athletic and Front Office Sports have both reported that the city is a front-runner to land an expansion franchise, but the NBA itself has not confirmed anything.
However, a Seattle return would undoubtedly be an incredible twist in Durant’s career. After a move to Golden State in 2016 made him a villain, Durant returning to his first NBA team would be a feel-good story with the potential to significantly boost his popularity.
Durant averaged 20.3 points per game with Seattle in his rookie year, but after just one season with the team, the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City.
