Keys, Pegula, and Badosa Headline Entry List for Charleston’s 2025 Season Opener on Clay

Keys, Pegula, and Badosa Headline Entry List for Charleston's 2025 Season Opener on Clay

The 2025 Charleston Open will run from March 31st until April 6th, and the entry list for the tournament in South Carolina has been unveiled.

Many consider the Charleston Open among the most prestigious WTA 500 events in the women’s game because of the superb crowds each year and the unique green clay it is played on.

Danielle Collins won the 2024 Charleston Open. Her title run in Charleston was part of an incredible 15-match winning streak from the start of the 2024 Miami Open until the round-of-16 at the 2024 Madrid Open.

Unsurprisingly, Collins plans on returning to Charleston. She did not drop a set on her way to the 2024 title, including victories against Sloane Stephens, Maria Sakkari, and Daria Kasatkina.

Jessica Pegula is the highest-ranked player on the entry list. She reached the semifinal last year before losing an epic battle against Kasatkina in a deciding set tiebreak after a match filled with twists and turns.

The American No. 2 had recently returned from an injury at the 2024 Charleston Open and was not at her best despite making it to the semifinal. She will hope to have better rhythm before this year’s tournament.

Pegula has already won a title this season, triumphing at last week’s ATX Open in Austin. The 31-year-old defeated her compatriot McCartney Kessler in the final with a clinical and impressive performance.

2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys is another notable name on the entry list. Her stunning triumph in Melbourne to claim her maiden Grand Slam title is undoubtedly the story of the season so far.

Keys did not play a match for over a month afterward because of a foot injury. The American’s appearance at the ongoing 2025 Indian Wells Open is her first appearance since the Australian Open.

Although being injured is frustrating for any player, Keys probably would have welcomed a break regardless. She recently spoke about being unable to celebrate properly in the days after the Australian Open because of constant media appearances.

Paula Badosa is on the Charleston Open entry list, but her involvement cannot be guaranteed at this stage. The Spaniard withdrew from the Indian Wells Open because of a lower back injury she sustained at the 2025 Merida Open.

That is especially concerning for Badosa because of her history of back problems. A similar injury ruled the 27-year-old out of the second half of 2023 and made her consider quitting tennis altogether.

Last year’s Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng is also set to feature at the Charleston Open. After a superb 2024 that also included being the runner-up at the Australian Open and WTA Finals, she has started this season slowly, losing three consecutive matches before the Indian Wells Open.

Other players on the Charleston Open entry list include Emma Navarro, Amanda Anisimova, Diana Shnaider, Jelena Ostapenko, and Beatriz Haddad Maia. As always, it should be a great tournament in South Carolina.
