The biggest decision of the NFL offseason came during the NFL Draft when the Atlanta Falcons made the shocking move to draft Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick.
This pick was stunning, not because of Penix’s abilities, but because they had just signed four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year deal worth $180 million.
Other than Cousins’ Achilles, there wasn’t a real reason why Atlanta felt the need to draft a quarterback, especially that high.
Now, when is Penix going to take over?
In two years?
Three?
Nobody knows how this is going to shake out.
However, fans and pundits finally got to hear from Kirk Cousins on the topic.
“We’re trying to win the Super Bowl and it’s hard enough. So let’s all be on the same page and let’s go try to win the Super Bowl,” he recently told Bussin’ with the Boys.
The former Viking also mentioned that there is no beef between him and the organization.
It is hard to imagine why the Falcons made this call when they already had a franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
If they are trying to copy what the Green Bay Packers have done, it’s not exactly a certainty that Cousins will want to be done starting after just three years.
The Packers also didn’t exactly bring in Favre and Rodgers as free agents before drafting their successors.
In the end, this all depends on whether or not Atlanta can win a Super Bowl within the next few years.
If they do, Cousins can ride off into the sunset and hand the crown over to Penix Jr.
