In the first blockbuster trade before the deadline, the Knicks struck a massive deal to acquire Raptors wing OG Anunoby by trading their young core, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley.
Toronto will also receive Detroit’s 2024 second-round pick in the deal.
ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski shares details of the Knicks’ plans for Anunoby.
“The Knicks, who are also getting forward Precious Achiuwa and guard Malachi Flynn in the deal, have been pursuing Anunoby for a significant period of time and are determined to re-sign him as a free agent this summer, sources told ESPN,” Wojnarowski said.
26-year-old Anunoby has been one of the league’s most sought after trade assets over the past two years and New York will get the chance to sell him on the dream before free agency.
“We’re ecstatic to welcome OG, Malachi, and Precious to the Knicks family,” Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement. “OG’s complete offensive game and ability to defend multiple positions will enhance our team on both ends of the court. … Malachi and Precious are well-rounded players that will complement the hardworking and talented nature of our group.
“OG, Malachi, and Precious are perfect additions to the type of team and culture we are building in New York.”
The deal sends Barrett back to his home country of Canada where his father Rowan Barrett Sr., is the GM for Team Canada basketball.
“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to RJ and Immanuel for their time in New York,” Rose said. “RJ and Immanuel both began their professional careers in Knicks uniforms and their contributions both on and off the court have had a great impact on this city and organization.
“They represented our organization with class every day and we wish them nothing but the best.”
The Raptors are widely expected to keep exploring trade options for forward Pascal Siakam, but Wojnarowski reports that, “there are no deals with traction now, sources said.”
Both Siakam and Anunoby could both end up being be free agents this summer.
