Korda Claims Victory in Delray Beach, Becomes Ninth American Champion

Sebastian Korda clinched the third title of his burgeoning career with an impressive victory over fellow American Tommy Paul in the final of the Delray Beach Open, an ATP 250 event. Korda, who finished as a finalist in 2021, took control of the match to secure a convincing 6-3, 6-3 triumph and etched his name as the ninth American to claim the coveted trophy.

Following his victory, Korda reflected on the significance of this win, particularly after facing a challenging run in previous tournaments. “It means a lot. I’ve been through some stuff the past couple of months, years,” said Korda, who also improved his ranking to No. 40 in the world. “I’ve lost a lot of finals, and now to get one here in Delray—this is where I made my first ATP final—so it’s like a full-circle day. I’m just happy.”

The 25-year-old showcased remarkable poise in difficult, windy conditions, effectively controlling the match from the baseline. His decisive break came at 5-4 in the first set, and he maintained strong serving to build on that momentum.

Korda faced a moment of pressure while serving for the match when Paul managed to create three break point opportunities. Yet, Korda remained composed, successfully navigating through each challenge before closing out the match in 82 minutes. “It was tricky. We were both struggling out there; it was super windy,” Korda noted. “I was just trying to put the ball in the court. I was born and raised in Florida, so I’m used to the wind a little bit, but this was extreme for sure.”

On his path to the final, Korda ousted three of the top five seeds, including a hard-fought quarterfinal against second seed Casper Ruud and a semifinal victory over third seed Flavio Cobolli.

This final marked the second all-American championship of the season, following the tournament in Dallas just a week prior. With his latest victory, Korda has now secured five wins in seven matches against Paul, blocking his compatriot’s attempt at a fifth career title.
