The Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, held in Acapulco, has surged forward into the second round despite significant political unrest in the region following the death of a notorious cartel leader. Organizers were initially considering canceling the tournament, but ultimately, the events proceeded without major disruption.
In a surprising twist, the tournament saw the early exits of both the second and third seeds—Alex de Minaur and Casper Ruud, alongside British player Cameron Norrie, who was seeded seventh.
De Minaur, fresh off his title win in Rotterdam just two weeks prior, faced off against American qualifier Patrick Kypson. In an intense match, Kypson emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(4). The young American demonstrated resilience, saving two match points when De Minaur served for the match at 5-4 in the final set. After a gripping two-hour and nineteen-minute battle, Kypson sealed his victory in the tiebreak. “It feels amazing,” he remarked post-match, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong serve and return to achieve his win.
Kypson’s next challenge will be against Brandon Nakashima, who comfortably defeated Elias Ymer 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
Casper Ruud, competing in his second tournament since welcoming his new child, faced a spirited challenge from Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing. In a tightly contested match, Wu triumphed with a score of 7-6(2), 7-6(1), showcasing an assertive playing style and delivering flawless performances in both tiebreaks. “I had to stay patient and at the same time aggressive,” Wu stated, reflecting on the demanding nature of battling against one of the top players on tour.
Cameron Norrie also faced an unexpected defeat as he was dispatched in straight sets by Spanish wildcard Rafael Jodar, who won 6-3, 6-2.
On a more positive note for the higher seeds, Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s top seed, advanced to the second round with a solid victory against France’s Corentin Moutet, with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-4, marking his 15th win at this event.
Returning to Acapulco for the first time in 17 years, the charismatic Gael Monfils also impressed with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Damir Dzumhur. At nearly 40 years old, Monfils became the second-oldest wildcard winner in the tournament’s history, trailing only Feliciano Lopez.
The eighth seed, Frances Tiafoe, continued his strong form with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nuno Borges. In other notable first-round results, Alejandro Davidovic Fokina, the finalist from 2025, progressed past Daniel Altmaier with a score of 7-5, 6-3, while Mattia Bellucci overcame last week’s Delray Beach champion, Sebastian Korda, in a 7-6(5), 6-3 result.
Miomir Kecmanovic breezed past Tristan Schoolkate with a 6-2, 6-2 win, setting up a second-round encounter with Zverev. Valentin Vacherot outlasted Coleman Wong 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Aleksander Kovacevic bested Adam Walton with a two-set score of 7-6(1), 7-6(3).
As the tournament progresses, players and fans alike are eager to see how the remaining matches unfold amidst the challenging backdrop of the local environment.
