Kyrgios hoping for “one to two more really, really good years”

Kyrgios hoping for “one to two more really, really good years”

Nick Kyrgios’ comeback to tennis remains uncertain, but he does plan on returning at some point. The 28-year-old said as much during a recent in-depth interview with Piers Morgan.

“At the moment I’m dealing with some health issues,” Kyrgios commented. “So (I’m) just trying to get back healthy. I definitely don’t see myself going anywhere in the near future. I want to get back on the tour and have one to two more really, really good years. And I think that’s possible.”

The Australian played only one match in 2023, losing to Yibing Wu in the opening round of a grass-court tournament in Stuttgart. He has been dealing with both knee and wrist issues. Having not won a match since October of 2022 in Tokyo, Kyrgios is currently unranked.

His status for the 2024 Australian Open is unclear.

“I’m a day-by-day guy,” Kyrgios said. “I don’t like setting goals or plans. I just take every day and see how my body’s feeling…. Look, plans can change.”

The former world No. 13 has done some of his best work at the Aussie Open. He has reached at least the third round five times, including two fourth-round finishes and one quarterfinal performance. Kyrgios and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis made a dramatic run to the doubles title in 2022.

Next year’s Australian Open is sure to be a big one no matter what, as it will mark Rafael Nadal’s first Grand Slam appearance since the same event this past season.
