Lavelle: USWNT Must Never Face Another Challenge Unpreparedn

Rose Lavelle Reflects on Championship Success and Upcoming Matches Against Italy

Midfielder Rose Lavelle of Gotham FC expressed the importance of team unity as the United States prepares to face Italy in a pair of friendlies. She emphasized learning from their recent 2-1 defeat to Portugal in October as they look to improve their performance.

The USWNT is set to host Italy in Orlando, Florida on November 28, followed by a second match in Fort Lauderdale on December 1.

“In that initial game against Portugal, we needed to reconnect and play as a team,” Lavelle remarked. “It wasn’t due to lack of effort; we worked hard. However, it was essential to harmonize our play. During the rest of the camp, we focused on returning to our core principles.”

“Heading into the Italy match, we understand that our performance against Portugal fell below our expectations. While we left that game disappointed, we also recognized the chance to learn and improve for the rematch two days later,” she added. “Our goal is to quickly align and ensure we don’t repeat that experience.”

The USWNT experienced mixed results during their last camp, first losing to Portugal before bouncing back to win 3-1 against them shortly after. Coach Emma Hayes highlighted the need for the team to approach the upcoming matches fully prepared to avoid another subpar performance.

“Our players are aware of Italy’s reputation. Many of them compete in the Champions League against teams like Juventus and Roma, so they understand the level of talent we’ll face,” Hayes stated. “This is a team that has been developing their game for some time.”

“It’s crucial we don’t start the match the way we did against Portugal last camp. We must ensure we perform at our best against such high-caliber opposition,” she emphasized.

Hayes also confirmed that all Gotham FC players will be available for selection after their recent victory in the NWSL Championship against the Washington Spirit, winning 1-0 on November 22.

“It was an exhilarating match, filled with plenty of adrenaline,” Hayes reflected. “I’ve managed their workloads, and they’re ready for Friday’s game. All players are eager to represent our country, which will make for some tough selection decisions.”
