Lazio remains determined to sign Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood – Latest on Man United Transfer News

Mason Greenwood: Lazio not giving up on signing Manchester United striker - Man United News And Transfer News

Lazio president Claudio Lotito is poised to make a move for Mason Greenwood.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Marseille’s negotiations with Manchester United for Greenwood were nearing completion, but backlash from fans and political figures has complicated the deal.

Marseille ultras have been vocally opposed to Greenwood’s arrival, citing his past legal issues.

Greenwood was accused of attempted rape and assault in January 2022, leading to his exclusion from United.

Although the charges were dropped in 2023, the controversy has persisted, fueling the Marseille ultras’ indignation. They issued a statement condemning the transfer, stating it would irreparably damage the club’s values and their passion for it.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan echoed this sentiment, urging the club’s president, Pablo Longoria, to cancel the deal.

The controversy has presented an opportunity for Lazio, with Lotito hopeful that Marseille’s withdrawal will allow his club to step in.

The Ligue 1 club had reportedly offered €27 million, later increasing to €30 million, but unresolved parameters related to future resale percentages stalled the deal.

This impasse, coupled with the backlash, has kept Greenwood at United for now.

Despite the ultras’ uproar, Marseille’s new coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has expressed support for Greenwood, labeling him a champion and criticizing those who judge the player without knowing the full story.

However, Longoria’s recent comments on RMC Sport, emphasizing the club’s commitment to values, hint at a possible reversal in their pursuit of the player.

Lotito remains ready to make an improved offer for Greenwood, needing to raise his bid from €20 million plus 50% of future resale to at least €25 million.

Greenwood is keen to resolve his future by Friday, leaving the door open for Lazio to capitalize on the situation.

As the transfer saga unfolds, Lazio may also explore other attacking options. Names like Rennes winger Edon Zhegrova and Barcelona’s Vitor Roque have been mentioned as potential targets.

Meanwhile, Lazio is also dealing with possible departures, with Partizan Belgrade’s Bazdar and Montevideo’s Nacional showing interest in Vecino, who could leave by 2025.
