LeBron James Set to Skip Entire Lakers Preseason: What It Means for the Upcoming NBA Season

LeBron James is making a cautious approach ahead of his 23rd NBA season. The 40-year-old star of the Los Angeles Lakers has decided to sit out the remainder of the preseason as he recuperates from nerve irritation in his glute, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

This decision aligns with a strategic plan to ensure James is fully prepared for the Lakers’ regular-season opener against the Golden State Warriors on October 21.

James has been engaged in limited on-court activities, gradually increasing his preparation as he looks to get back into game shape.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick addressed the media, explaining that the veteran forward is pacing himself cautiously leading up to the season’s start. “It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading up to opening night for him,” Redick remarked. “In year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.”

Redick also acknowledged that last year’s training camp may have overextended James, reflecting on the team’s approach from the previous season.

Even with heavy workload, James showcased his enduring talent last season, participating in 70 games while averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds over nearly 35 minutes of play per game.

The Lakers’ coaching staff remains dedicated to managing his workload to keep him fresh for the long haul.

Last season, James faced challenges with lingering foot and ankle pain, and he later sprained his MCL during the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves, an injury that could have sidelined him for a considerable period if the Lakers had progressed further.

As James enters his age-40 season (with his 41st birthday in December) and still contemplates his future in the league, his priority is clear: staying healthy when it matters most. The Lakers, boosted by the presence of Luka Doncic, are targeting another strong playoff run and are unwilling to jeopardize their star’s health for unimportant preseason minutes.
