After Bryson DeChambeau’s historic victory at Pinehurst No. 2 gave LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman a chance to hold the U.S. Open trophy for the first time, Lee Westwood, another player from the same circuit, is now at the U.S. Senior Open in the nation’s smallest state, hoping to add more hardware to Norman’s collection.
Westwood recently finished third at LIV Golf Nashville, which was won by Tyrrell Hatton, marking his best finish of the season. A similar performance at Newport Country Club could put him in contention for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy, a title Norman was unable to win in three attempts.
Westwood credited his improved putting and all-around short game for his recent success, stating that carrying on with the same mindset from Nashville has boosted his confidence going into this week’s tournament.
In addition to Westwood, Senior PGA Championship winner Richard Bland is also participating at Newport Country Club. Westwood mentioned the positive feedback he has received regarding the field of players 50 and over at the tournament.
Westwood expressed excitement about playing alongside Miguel and Jerry Kelly in the first couple of rounds and emphasized the importance of maintaining good form from the previous week.
With a history of representing Europe in 10 Ryder Cups and holding the number one spot in the Official World Golf Ranking in 2010, Westwood shared his observation about the faster pace of practice rounds at the U.S. Senior Open compared to other tournaments. He noted the efficiency of playing nine holes in two hours during practice rounds and questioned why younger players couldn’t adopt the same approach.
