The injured Leny Yoro is working hard and says he is “on the way back” in an exciting fitness update.

In a video posted to his Instagram story, simply captioned “on the way back”, Yoro is seen running on a treadmill as he edges closer to a return to action.

The 18-year-old centre-back fractured his foot in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal and has been sidelined ever since.

Hopes remain high that the talented Frenchman will make his first competitive appearance for Manchester United this year, although this would most likely be closer to Christmas than Halloween.

Speaking to club media last month, manager Erik ten Hag said that Yoro was “doing very well” and that his rehab was “going in the right direction”.

The Dutchman confirmed that Yoro was “in the right spot and he will return as soon as possible into the squad and then the team training.”

These comments came in the build-up to United’s miserable 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur, which marked something of a turning point for a hitherto reasonably impressive backline and redoubled fans’ impatience to have Yoro in the squad.

The Reds followed that defeat by shipping three goals to Porto in a Europa League draw which left starting centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez under intense scrutiny.

The pair were hauled off and replaced by Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire with ten minutes to go.

Maguire’s late header secured a point for United, and he earned a starting berth alongside the veteran Evans in last weekend’s drab goalless draw at Aston Villa, where the 36-year-old Northern Irishman shone as United’s man of the match.

Maguire has now joined Yoro on the physio’s bench, meaning the off-colour De Ligt or Martinez will likely return for United’s upcoming clash with Brentford.

The stage is certainly set for Yoro, who arrived at Old Trafford from Lille in a £52m deal in the summer.

The Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the top young defensive talents in world football and seemed destined for Real Madrid before United swooped in to make him a flagship signing for the new football hierarchy.
