Lessons from Jim Furyk’s Distinctive Golf Swing

Jim-Furyk

Jim Furyk has been part of the PGA Tour for the past 30 years, winning 17 times with his most notable victory at the 2003 US Open. He is known for breaking 60 twice and holds the record for a 58 on the Tour. Furyk captained the Ryder Cup team in 2018 and will lead the American Presidents Cup team. His swing coach throughout his career has been his dad Mike, showcasing its effectiveness and longevity. Despite his shorter stature, Furyk’s accuracy and ability to hit fairways and greens are exceptional.

Mike Furyk on his son’s swing

“My son Jim has an underturn/overturn swing, causing a left-to-right ball flight. His hands are close to his body at address, leading the club to move upward in the backswing, resulting in a ‘loop’ during the downswing. Over the years, Jim’s swing has evolved significantly, allowing him to maintain consistency and finish among the top 10 in Majors 23 times.”

Mark Immelman on Furyk’s swing

“Jim’s hand path during the swing involves lifting the arms upward as he transitions down, leading to a smooth contact with the ball and consistent strikes.”

Jim Furyk on his own swing

“Your swing path on the way down determines the ball’s trajectory. Practicing with proper alignment helps eliminate variables in your swing to achieve better results. Focus on where the ball starts and curves to understand your swing path and club face alignment.”
