Lille may part ways with Angel Gomes, a target for Manchester United, in the January transfer window.
Gomes, who was released by United in 2020 due to concerns about his physicality, has been performing well as a deep-lying playmaker in the French top flight. Lille showed confidence in Gomes by giving him a five-year contract before sending him on loan to Boavista.
Initially struggling in a more advanced role, Gomes found success as a deep midfielder under Paulo Fonseca’s management.
This change allowed him to showcase his exceptional ball skills and start to fulfill his potential.
Recently, new England manager Lee Carsley handed Gomes his debut for the national team, impressed by his performance against Finland.
Interest has also grown from top English clubs, with reports suggesting that Manchester United has entered the race for Gomes’ signature.
Gomes is approaching the end of his contract with Lille, giving him the opportunity to negotiate with clubs outside France from January onwards.
If Lille fails to extend his contract, journalist Ekrem Konur reports that the club is willing to sell Gomes in the winter window for a fee ranging from €15 million to €18 million.
Several clubs, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Napoli, are keen on securing Gomes’ services.
It remains to be seen whether Gomes will make a move in January or wait for a more lucrative offer as a free agent in the summer.
If Manchester United pursues Gomes, their past connection with the player might work in their favor.
