Lindsay Davenport has been reaffirmed in her role as the captain of the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team, extending her leadership through 2027. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced this two-year extension, further solidifying Davenport’s commitment to guiding the team in international competition.
Davenport, a former tennis superstar who left an indelible mark on the Billie Jean King Cup during her playing career, has led the U.S. squad since 2024. Under her direction, the team has achieved a respectable 5-2 record, recently making headlines with their appearance in the finals this past year—a significant achievement that marked the first time the U.S. reached the finals since 2018. However, they faced a formidable opponent in reigning champions Italy, led by Jasmine Paolini, who successfully defended their title by defeating the U.S. team, thus clinching their sixth Billie Jean King Cup championship.
Reflecting on her extension, Davenport expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to continue her role. “It’s an incredible honor to serve as the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup Captain, and I’m thrilled and humbled to continue doing it, especially during such an amazing time for women’s tennis in America. We have so many incredible athletes competing and winning at the highest levels year-round, and it’s a privilege to work with them while representing our country. I look forward to what we can accomplish together in the coming years,” she stated.
Davenport’s deep connection to the Billie Jean King Cup is highlighted by her record as one of its most successful players. She has helped the U.S. clinch titles in 1996, 1999, and 2000 and still holds the American record for the most years played in the competition, totaling 11 years. Notably, she remained undefeated during her time in what was then known as the Fed Cup.
Looking ahead, the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team will prepare for the 2025 Qualifying round scheduled for April. The specific opponent and venue will be determined through an upcoming draw, setting the stage for another exciting chapter in U.S. tennis under Davenport’s leadership.
