Former England international Gary Lineker has called for Gareth Southgate to step down, citing the coach’s defensive playing style as a hindrance to the team. Lineker made these remarks following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of the 2024 European Championship (EURO 2024).
England’s Defensive Approach Against Spain
While England has never been known for playing ultra-attacking football under Southgate, they typically seize opportunities when they arise. However, in the EURO 2024 final, they failed to capitalize and allowed Spain to take control of the match.
Spain took the lead in the 47th minute through a well-taken goal by Nico Williams. Despite Spain’s dominance, England did not respond well initially and could have conceded more goals if Spain had been more clinical in front of goal.
Southgate made positive changes after the hour mark, bringing on Ollie Watkins for Harry Kane (61′) and Cole Palmer for Kobbie Mainoo (70′). Palmer scored the equalizer just three minutes after coming on, giving England a chance to push for the win. However, they opted to defend their position, allowing Spain to capitalize and score the winning goal.
Spain secured a 2-1 victory in the 86th minute, with Mikel Oyarzabal calmly slotting home the decisive goal from close range.
Lineker Calls for Southgate’s Resignation and Suggests Ideal Replacement
Following England’s loss, Lineker commended Southgate for uniting the nation but criticized his defensive style, claiming it would not lead to success in major tournaments.
During The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker stated:
“I think he’s been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team.
“And, now, maybe it’s time for someone else with a more modern, attacking style of football. Because I think the game’s gone away from being successful if you’re really defensive.”
Lineker suggested that Jurgen Klopp would be an ideal replacement for Southgate. When asked by co-hosts Alan Shearer and Micah Richards about his preferred successor, Lineker added:
“Wouldn’t you go all out for Jurgen Klopp?”
Klopp is currently on a sabbatical after leaving his position as Liverpool’s manager at the end of the 2023-24 season. If England were to pursue Klopp, they would have to wait until he decides to return to coaching.
