When Jared Goff was traded by the Los Angeles Rams to the Detroit Lions during the 2021 offseason, many believed his career as a starting quarterback in the NFL was getting closer to the end.
But after helping lead the Lions to 12 wins, an NFC North title, and an appearance in the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers this season, Goff has re-established himself as a quarterback worthy of remaining a starter in the NFL.
Detroit has clearly been impressed with the veteran signal-caller’s performance this season as well, as they are reportedly willing to extend his current contract this year and increase his salary to a number that is closer to some of the most highly-paid quarterbacks in the league, this according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
“After the Super Bowl this offseason, the Lions and Goff’s representation are expected to begin talks on a contract extension,” Rapoport said.

Goff wasn’t really acquired by the Lions in 2021 to be a quarterback that the team would build around.
But his recent play out on the field has basically given Detroit no other choice than to see how much longer he can continue to play at a high level.
Goff is currently scheduled to become a free agent in 2025, so at the very least, he will likely be looking to sign an extension that keeps him with the Lions until the 2026 offseason.
Detroit might be willing to pay the veteran quarterback now, but it will be interesting to see how he performs without current Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson next season, as he is expected to leave later this year to fill one of the remaining head-coaching vacancies around the league.
Will Goff be able to continue his success without Johnson?
