Liverpool Questions PGMOL Over Disallowed Goal Against Manchester City
Liverpool has reached out to the PGMOL, the governing body for referees, to express their concerns regarding the decision to annul Virgil van Dijk‘s goal during their match against Manchester City, as reported by ESPN.
On Sunday, Arne Slot’s team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium but believed they had equalized with Van Dijk’s goal coming from a corner kick late in the first half.
The goal was disallowed after Andy Robertson, who was positioned offside, was judged to have obstructed the view of Gianluigi Donnarumma, the City goalkeeper. VAR official Michael Oliver supported the referee’s decision.
The Premier League match center stated on X that Robertson was seen as “making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.”
Sources indicate that Liverpool contends the interpretation of Law 11, concerning offside offenses, is straightforward and that none of the necessary criteria to rule out the goal were fulfilled. The club also maintains that after reviewing the footage, they do not believe Robertson hindered Donnarumma’s sight.
This loss positions Liverpool at eighth in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Arsenal by eight points.
