Liverpool’s unsuccessful last-minute bid to disrupt Manchester United’s signing of Matthijs de Ligt – Latest Man United News and Transfer Updates

Matthijs de Ligt offered five-year deal at Man United as Bayern Munich negotiate over transfer fee - Man United News And Transfer News

Liverpool were reportedly one of two top European clubs that made a last-minute attempt to hijack Manchester United’s deal for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

United are looking to bolster their defence this summer and it seems that at the moment, the club’s full attention is firmly on De Ligt.

It was stated that United already established contact with the centre-back’s camp and there is a five-year contract offer on the table for him. De Ligt is understood to be keen on sealing a transfer to Old Trafford ahead of a reunion with Erik ten Hag.

The player is even willing to take a pay cut to become the latest addition to Ten Hag’s backline at United.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Bayern want a fee in the region of €50m including add-ons to part ways with De Ligt.

On their part, United are hoping that they can strike an agreement with the Bavarian giants at around the €40m mark.

It seems that it’s only a matter of time until De Ligt signs for United, especially considering that Dan Ashworth is now in place as the club’s sporting director.

According to BILD journalist Christian Falk, Premier League rivals Liverpool and reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain made last-minute attempts to hijack United’s pursuit of De Ligt.

Speaking on the FC Bayern Insider podcast (via CaughtOffside), Falk revealed that in the past 24 hours, both Liverpool and PSG moved to try and steal De Ligt from under United’s nose.

CaughtOffside note, “Despite their efforts, the player’s agent reportedly informed them that the player remains steadfast in his desire to join Manchester United.”

While De Ligt’s desire to join United is clear, the 20-time English champions must move more swiftly to get their man, lest their rivals find an opening to strike and sway his decision.

De Ligt is currently with the Netherlands national team as they prepare for their Euro 2024 quarter-final clash against Turkiye.
