Lloris condemns Argentina’s Fernandez for offensive chant against French people

France Legend Hugo Lloris Slams Argentina Behavior

France legend Hugo Lloris has criticized Enzo Fernandez and his teammates for a controversial chant during Argentina’s Copa America celebrations. The former goalkeeper deemed the chant as a “proper attack” on French people and urged Argentine players to set a better example.

Enzo Fernandez & Some Argentina Players Involved In Racism Row

Chelsea midfielder Fernandez posted a video on social media showing him and some teammates singing a contentious song during Argentina’s Copa America victory celebrations. The song reportedly made derogatory remarks about French players’ heritage.

Following the viral post, Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, labeled the incident as “uninhibited racism” and unfollowed him on social media. Other Chelsea players, Malo Gusto and Axel Disasi, also distanced themselves from Fernandez online.

Moreover, Chelsea has initiated an internal investigation into Fernandez’s actions, while the Premier League is contemplating disciplinary measures. FIFA is also examining the video and may impose sanctions if warranted.

France Legend Lloris Slams Fernandez’s Behavior, Demands More Maturity From World Champions

Lloris, a key figure in France’s successful World Cup campaigns, criticized Fernandez and his colleagues’ conduct, labeling it as a direct affront to the French populace. He emphasized the obligations of Argentina as reigning world champions.

Lloris stated (via The Daily Mail):

They [Argentina] represent football globally and hold significant influence. Their on-field achievements deserve praise. Nevertheless, as winners, their behavior sets an example, especially for young fans. The derogatory remarks aimed at the French community, particularly those with African heritage, were uncalled for.”

Following the incident, Fernandez issued a public apology on July 16, attributing his actions to celebratory fervor. However, Lloris remained firm in his disapproval, asserting that such actions are inexcusable regardless of the circumstances.

Lloris added:

Regardless of the celebration, winners bear added responsibility. Discrimination and racism have no place in football. While mistakes happen, it is crucial to learn from them.”

This episode poses a challenge for new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who must navigate the situation swiftly to maintain team cohesion as they gear up for pre-season.
