London | Burrage undergoes wrist surgery

Jodie Burrage, Britain’s No 2, has undergone wrist surgery after suffering a left wrist injury in practice a fortnight ago, and, therefore, she will be missing the next few months of competition.

… smiling here because everything went well yesterday (and I was high on drugs), and the recovery process can start. It won’t be easy but I’ve got people around me who I know will help get me through it. Thank you to everyone who continues to support me and hopefully see you in a few months. Jodie Burrage

Burrage, who revealed the news on Instagram, suffered the injury prior to a 1st-round qualifying loss in San Diego, and took the difficult decision to go under the knife.

The 24-year old posted the news with a picture from her hospital bed, her left arm in a sling.

“Little update: I don’t know where to start,” wrote Burrage. “My first practice in San Diego, I hit one backhand and felt something pop in my left wrist. After advice from multiple doctors and surgeons, surgery was the best option.

“Making the decision to get my 4th surgery was brutal… accepting it will take time.

Currently ranked 86, just one spot below her career high, Burrage inevitably will drop down the standings and is likely to miss the grass-court season, when, last year, she reached the final of the WTA Tour event in Nottingham.

It is unfortunate timing for Burrage, who has been held back by repeated ankle problems before breaking into the Top 100 for the first time last year.

Emma Raducanu expressed her sympathy for Burrage on social media, sharing her picture from her hospital bed on her own Instagram platform, and writing: “@jodie_burrge wrists suck but you’re stronger.“

Raducanu added two heart emojis and two hi-five emojis showing her respect and solidarity with her fellow Brit.

At Indian Wells, Raducanu reflected that she went through difficult challenges of her own, following her 3 surgeries.

“Yeah I had three surgeries in ten days, which was pretty intense,” she said. “I mean for two-three weeks, you can’t do anything because all that has to swell and all that, you can’t move, like, I had a scooter, and I can’t even use crutches. It’s because of my wrist surgeries.

“So, it was really difficult, and I was, kind of, swapping two weeks in a cast. It wasn’t necessarily smooth coming back.”

Raducanu added that Burrage is a grounded and humble person, and her resilience is an inspiration to her fellow colleagues.
