Caroline Wozniacki’s absence at the start of 2025 has been explained after the Dane announced on Sunday in a post on social media that she and her husband David Lee are expecting their 3rd child.
Officially switching to zone defense! Our family couldn’t be more excited to welcome baby #3 soon! Caroline Wozniacki
Posing on the beach with her husband, a retired NBA player, and their two children, Olivia and James, Wozniacki made a reference to her husband’s athletic career in sharing the news.
“Officially switching to zone defense!” the 34-year-old wrote on Instagram, joking that she and the 41-year-old 2015 NBA champion will soon be outnumbered by their children. “Our family couldn’t be more excited to welcome baby #3 soon!”
The couple already share a daughter Olivia, aged 3, and son James, who is 2, both of whom were born during Wozniacki’s 3-year hiatus from the Hologic WTA Tour.
The 2018 Australian Open champion retired from tennis after playing in Melbourne in 2020 and became a mother in 2021, returning to the tour in the summer of 2023.
In the two years of her return, Wozniacki twice reached the 4th round of the US Open, where she was a runner-up twice, and took a set from eventual champion Coco Gauff at the 2023 edition.
Last year, she reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells, got to the 3rd round at Wimbledon, represented Denmark at the Paris Olympics, and returned to the Top 100 in the PIF WTA Rankings.
After concluding her US Open run, though, the former World No. 1 hinted she would not play any tournaments in the rest of 2024, which proved the case, and when the 2025 season started, fans noticed that Wozniacki’s name was crossed off the Australian Open’s player field.
There was no official withdrawal announcement, or a reason listed since, with some suspecting that the one-time Grand Slam champion had retired again, but, after some time, the Dane claimed that her rheumatoid arthritis was causing her problems.
“My body was not feeling great,” Wozniacki said. “When I started pre-season training I was struggling with my body a little bit. I have rheumatoid arthritis so it’s been an ongoing battle but I am hoping with a little break I will be back again soon.”
At the time, Wozniacki added that she “still [had] goals” she wanted to accomplish.
“I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams, no matter your age or role,” she said.
Despite having not played this year, Wozniacki was still on hand at the Australian Open as a commentator, and carried the trophy into Rod Laver Arena on Day 1 of the tournament.
The growing family received well-wishes from Wozniacki’s peers, including former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard, and 3-time major champion Angelique Kerber, a good friend of the Dane’s who announced her own 2nd pregnancy earlier this year.
