Last year Cameron Norrie won the Rio Open staged at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Rio de Janeiro, by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final, having lost to the Spaniard at the same stage a week before in Buenos Aires, so he has happy memories of his stint in South America.
This year he wasn’t so fortunate losing in the opening round in BA with plenty to play for this week in Brazil and, to that end, has made an excellent start by defeating Bolivian Hugo Dellieri 6-3 6-2 in the ATP 500 level event’s opening round.
It took the second seed just 82-minutes to complete his victory, converting three of the seven opportunities which he brought up and saving the only break point he faced.
“Good sensations, good feelings on this court,” Norrie said in his on-court interview and declaring it hadn’t been easy,
One year ago, Norrie and Dellien met for the first time with the eventual champion having to recover from a set down in contrast to Monday’s clash.
“I think I managed my service games really well,” Norrie added. “I served much better than last week and I was a bit more patient and knew I had to play point for point and really make the rallies a bit longer. I think I learned from last week with that, and just happy to be back in Brazil.”
Norrie plays Tomas Barrios Vera next after the Chilean eliminated Brazilian wild card Gustavo Heide 7-5 6-3.
In other action, fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1 1-6 6-2 victory against fellow Argentine Francisco Comesana.
The two-time titlist will face Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the second round after the Spaniard clawed past Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 3-6 6-3 7-5 in two hours and 44-minutes.
Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild thrilled his home crowd by rallying past Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 2-6 6-4 6-4 to play Spaniard Jaume Munar, who dismissed eighth seed Sebastian Ofner 6-3 6-1.
Sixth seed Laslo Djere from Serbia, the 2019 Rio de Janeiro champion, progressed with a 6-3 6-1 win over Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
