Egg Incident at Luis Rubiales’ Book Launch

During the promotion of his new book, former president of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, was the target of an egg-throwing incident on Thursday evening.

Rubiales stepped down from his position with RFEF in September 2023, following widespread backlash over his behavior after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory, including an unsolicited kiss to player Jenni Hermoso. Earlier this year, he was found guilty of sexual assault due to this incident.

His book, titled “Kill Rubiales,” aims to provide insight into his perspective on the controversies surrounding him. The launch event took place on Madrid’s Maria de Molina Street, where chaos ensued as a man threw three eggs at Rubiales while he was being interviewed live in front of an audience.

In a surprising turn, Rubiales identified the egg-thrower as his own uncle, Luis Rubén, describing him as a “troublemaker” who may require assistance. He also mentioned that his uncle was taken into custody following the incident, expressing regret over the disruption it caused.

Video captured the moment Rubiales attempted to confront the egg-thrower, who was quickly escorted away by security. “I was unsure of what he had,” Rubiales later recounted on Radio Marca. “I feared he might be armed and wasn’t thinking about my own safety at that moment.”

Further footage showed police detaining the man outside the event venue. Rubiales continues to deal with the legal aftermath of his previous conviction, with his appeal against a fine exceeding €10,000 rejected by Spain’s High Court in June. His lawyer has indicated plans to take the case to the Supreme Court.
