The absence of the Portuguese defender raised concerns about Pep Guardiola’s defensive strategy, particularly against an Arsenal team known for its pace and attacking prowess.

Reason Behind Ruben Dias’ Absence

As reported by Sam Lee of The Athletic, Dias is dealing with a hamstring injury sustained earlier in the week.

“Ruben Dias will not participate in the Carabao Cup Final due to a hamstring injury.”

The 28-year-old defender was substituted at halftime during a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, after remaining on the bench in a recent Premier League match against West Ham.

Dias previously missed eight matches earlier this year due to a hamstring issue before returning in February. He has also been excluded from Portugal’s upcoming friendlies against Mexico and the USA by manager Roberto Martinez.

Manchester City will also be without starting center-back Marc Guehi, who is cup-tied after competing for his former club Crystal Palace in this tournament.

Additionally, Josko Gvardiol is unavailable as he continues his recovery from a broken leg sustained in January.

This latest setback continues a frustrating season for Dias, who has had recurrent fitness issues impacting his playing time.

City’s Defensive Changes Against Arsenal

The absence of Dias left Guardiola with limited options in central defense, necessitating a significant adjustment for this crucial fixture.

When Manchester City’s lineup for the Carabao Cup final was released, it was notable that Phil Foden was on the bench, while Erling Haaland and Rodri were starters, highlighting the team’s overall depth despite defensive challenges.

Not long ago, it would have been surprising to see a key player like Foden not starting in a match of such importance, but the focal point remained on the absence of their key defender.

On the other hand, Arsenal also missed significant players like Eberechi Eze and Jurrien Timber, yet Mikel Arteta still fielded a strong lineup aiming to exploit City’s weakened defense.

With the first trophy of the season at stake, the absence of Dias fundamentally influenced the tactical dynamic from the very start, rendering City more exposed than their usual solid performance in high-pressure situations.
