Man United set sights on Jeremie Frimpong as release clause deadline looms following Euros

Manchester United target Jeremie Frimpong's release clause expires a week after the Euros - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United have made a great start in the summer market with INEOS making multiple enquiries for players across Europe.

Erik ten Hag’s disastrous eighth-place league finish highlighted the deficiencies in his first-team squad leaving INEOS with work to do over the coming months.

Defensively, United were poor last season and reinforcements to the back line are a must this summer.

Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a long time but United will need to act fast in order to seal a comparatively cheaper deal for the Dutchman.

As reported by BILD, Frimpong has a release clause in his contract that runs out a week after the conclusion of the European Championships.

Leverkusen are therefore growing increasingly confident of keeping one of their star performers from last season, or spark a bidding war in the coming days.

Frimpong’s clause stands at a reported €40 million which represents decent value in the current market given his age and ability and performances in the last few years.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season with Xabi Alonso’s men last time out, winning a historic domestic double whilst going the entire campaign unbeaten.

Frimpong is also on the verge of reaching the European Championships final in his first international tournament with the Netherlands.

Only Gareth Southgate’s England stand in the way of a date with Spain in the summit clash on Sunday.

If his release clause isn’t met, it is likely that he will be priced out of a move with Leverkusen then able to slap an unrealistic price tag on his head.

BILD also state that the player “dreams of Real, Liverpool (with whom he has recently been in contact), Man City or Arsenal” but did not mention United.

It would be a surprise to see United trigger the defender’s release clause with multiple deals already in the pipeline in other areas of the pitch.

Diogo Dalot has emerged as the undisputed first-choice at right-back for Ten Hag and despite Frimpong’s talents, United are better served focussing their attention elsewhere.

A raft of United stars have already reported back for training with the first of their pre-season games coming up next Monday against Rosenborg in Norway.
