A Manchester United fan appeared in court and expressed his deep shame after being caught engaging in offensive chanting and gestures towards Liverpool supporters during a FA Cup match on 17th March. Despite United’s 4-3 victory at Old Trafford, the game was marred by incidents of unsportsmanlike behavior.
Michael Avery, a 45-year-old construction worker, pleaded guilty to a public order offense at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court. He was captured mocking Liverpool fans with offensive gestures related to past tragedies at Hillsborough and Heysel stadiums, causing distress among both sets of supporters.
In his court appearance, Avery expressed remorse for his actions and urged fellow United fans to learn from his mistake. He stated, “I just want to reiterate that I’m just deeply sorry and I really regret what I did.” Avery acknowledged feeling ashamed and embarrassed, emphasizing that he hoped others would think twice before engaging in similar behavior at football matches.
As a result of his actions, Avery received an £800 fine, a three-year football banning order, and was required to pay a victim surcharge and prosecution costs. He was also instructed to surrender his passport during certain international games.
