Manchester City target ex-Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes – Latest Updates from Man United’s Transfer Market

Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes on Newcastle United's radar - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester City have joined the growing list of Premier League and European clubs interested in former Manchester United talent Angel Gomes, as per reports.

In the summer of 2020, Gomes found himself without a club, as United decided against placing their trust in his skill sets and released him upon the expiration of his contract.

The English playmaker was considered a top talent during his academy days, and was subsequently handed a senior debut at the age of 16. However, he struggled to adapt physically and was eventually shown the exit door.

Lille took a gamble on him and their manager Paulo Fonseca figured out a way to best utilise his talent by playing him as the deepest midfielder in his setup. Since then his career has been on the up.

Most recently, he attracted the attention of England manager Lee Carsley, who handed him his maiden senior cap during September’s international break. The 24-year-old’s performances for club and country have also led to interest from clubs across England and Europe.

According to TBR Football, Tottenham Hotspur are “keeping close tabs” on Gomes. However, the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Inter Milan are “ready to join the chase” for the ex-United player.

The report further reads: “It is understood in recent weeks, they have all made enquiries about his situation and to assess his feelings about his next move.”

Gomes is in the final year of his contract at Lille, who allegedly expect him to depart on a free transfer next summer.

Following Rodri’s season-ending injury, City have been linked with several midfielders ahead of the January transfer window.

Gomes has established himself as one of the best deep-lying midfielders in Ligue 1 and is certainly capable of playing in Pep Guardiola’s possession-heavy system.

However, United are also reported to be in the race for their academy product.

Interestingly, Gomes recently admitted that he would find it difficult to snub an opportunity to return to Old Trafford should the Red Devils come calling.
