Joshua Zirkzee’s January Transfer Hopes Unfulfilled
Joshua Zirkzee’s quest to rejoin Serie A this month has met a significant setback, with Roma’s director of football, Frederic Massara, stating that Manchester United has firmly rejected any possibility of a January transfer.
Despite the Dutch forward’s struggles at Old Trafford and a strong desire for more playing time, the Manchester club is not willing to let him leave during the season.
In a conversation with Italian media prior to Roma’s 2-0 victory over Torino, Massara made the club’s position unequivocally clear. He remarked, “Manchester United declined our interest clearly a few weeks ago and their stance remains unchanged,” effectively halting Roma’s pursuit of Zirkzee even before the transfer window reaches its pivotal moments.
United’s Stance Remains Unyielding Amid Player Discontent
Zirkzee, who joined Manchester United following a successful stint with Bologna, has found it challenging to maintain that high level of performance in England.
Limited playing time, tactical changes under various managers, and stiff competition for starting positions have all contributed to a frustrating initial half of the season for him.
His well-documented aspiration to return to Serie A stems from his strong performance in Italy, where his physicality, ability to link play, and creative skills were appreciated.
A move to Roma, where he would likely take on a leading role in the team’s attack, was viewed as a perfect opportunity to rejuvenate his career.
International Aspirations in Jeopardy
One pressing reason for Zirkzee’s desire to leave is his ambition to earn a spot in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Given the fierce competition for attacking positions within the national team, including players like Cody Gakpo, Memphis Depay, Brian Brobbey, and Donyell Malen, Zirkzee knows that benching at Manchester United will hinder his chances.
A transfer to Roma, where he would likely enjoy more playing time and a defined role, was considered the ideal route to revitalizing his international career.
Now, with Zirkzee not an option, Roma will need to seek other targets in Serie A and beyond to strengthen their squad.
