Concerns Rise for Manchester United’s Sesko After Draw with Tottenham
LONDON — Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim expressed concern for star forward Benjamin Sesko, who may face an extended period on the sidelines following a knee injury sustained during the 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Sesko, who was substituted in during the 58th minute, had to leave the match in the 88th minute after a collision with Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
Although the Slovenian international managed to walk off the pitch after receiving medical treatment, Amorim was apprehensive about the severity of the injury in his post-match comments. “We need to evaluate the situation,” he stated. “He has an issue with his knee, and we believe it’s concerning.”
When asked whether Sesko could be out for a significant period, Amorim did not provide a reassuring response. “It’s a knee injury, and those are unpredictable,” he remarked. “At this moment, Sesko’s performance is not my primary concern; it’s the injury itself that worries me.”
As United prepares to lose forwards Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo to the Africa Cup of Nations next month, Amorim acknowledged the potential need to bolster the squad in January, especially if Sesko’s condition proves dire. “We need to assess Ben’s situation,” he commented. “We anticipated challenges with the AFCON players, so we must be ready for that.”
Despite the injury uncertainties, United continues to vie for a Champions League spot, having extended their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to five matches. However, Amorim’s team has drawn their last two away games, managing to secure late equalizers against both Spurs and Nottingham Forest.
Amorim criticized his team’s performance against Tottenham, stating that they should have been more assertive. “We are beginning to improve, but we must strive for better performance and embrace the atmosphere of the stadium,” he noted. “We had the opportunity to claim three points today. While we managed the game well, we need to enhance our game.” He added, “When a win isn’t possible, at least we shouldn’t lose, but we had the chance to secure the victory today.”
