Manchester United are interested in Feyenoord’s right back Lutsharel Geertruida should Aaron Wan-Bissaka leave the club this summer.
After strengthening the striker and centre back positions so far this transfer window, the Red Devils are now shifting focus to central midfield and full back positions.
Left back was originally the main priority due to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness issues.
A report emerged yesterday that United were prioritising three left back targets with Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, Feyenoord’s David Hancko and free agent Marcos Alonso, who used to play for Chelsea and Barcelona, all generating interest.
Nonetheless, the emerging possibility that Wan-Bissaka could leave the club has increased the need for a signing at right back.
After a stellar season, Diogo Dalot is set to be the number one choice but United would be in need of a back-up should Wan-Bissaka complete a move to West Ham United, who are interested in the Englishman.
United have been linked heavily to Noussair Mazraoui at Bayern Munich and he is a likely candidate to be signed as he was a former player of Erik ten Hag’s at Ajax and it has been reported that the Dutch coach sees him as a route to unlock Antony’s potential due to the duo’s previous successful partnership in the Eredivisie.
There are other options on the table however as Football Transfers report that “Man Utd are exploring options in case Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves Old Trafford. Vanderson, also of Monaco, and Lutsharel Geertruida of Feyenoord are names they admire.”
Geertruida is a 24 year old senior Dutch international who played two games at Euro 2024.
Last season he played 47 times for Feyenoord, scoring an incredible nine goals and creating five more goals.
The full back also has impressive positional versatility as he can play centre back and also in a defensive midfield pivot, which could be invaluable to United as they are currently struggling to raise money for significant purchases after spending on Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
His offensive strength is a significant selling point of the player and he has been described as having “elite-level composure and ball control for a possession-based defender.”
“He uses his body well to shield the ball, allowing him to execute low-risk turns to evade pressing attackers. This shielding is the key differentiator between press evasion and offensive take-ons.”
With a transfer value of €32 million according to transfermarkt.com, the tactically flexible, marauding full back may just be an intelligent option for the Red Devils to pursue.
