Manchester United considering surprise move for Brighton captain Lewis Dunk – Latest Updates and Transfer News from Old Trafford

Manchester United eyeing shock raid on Brighton for their skipper Lewis Dunk - Man United News And Transfer News

The new season has not gone according to plan thus far, with results mirroring those from last season as the Red Devils have now lost three of the first four games in all competitions.

The defeat at the hands of Liverpool last weekend meant the Old Trafford side have now conceded five goals in the last two games which have included defensive errors galore.

Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro were brought in to solidify the heart of the defence and while the Dutchman has looked sharp, the young Frenchman remains injured and is not expected back before the end of the year.

In concerning news, Lisandro Martinez has not started the season in his typical fashion, struggling with his passing and defensive awareness.

Left-sided centre-back needed

Ten Hag’s system relies a lot on the Argentine’s ball-playing ability and after last season’s injury hell, there was a growing realization that the club needed a backup in case things went south with the World Cup winner.

United tried to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton due to his ability to play on the left-side and for his ball-playing skills but the Toffees ended up rejecting two big bids this summer.

While the 20-time English league champions are expected to return for the Englishman, there is a new and rather surprising target added to the list.

Fichajes have claimed Brighton and Hove Albion skipper Lewis Dunk is on United’s radar and with only two years left in his current deal, INEOS could jump for him next summer and could realistically get him for a reduced fee.

The England international plays as the left centre-back and has really grown in stature in the last few years, even going on to earn his national team bow under Gareth Southgate.

The 6.3 ft defender’s experience could come in handy, especially with Jonny Evans likely to retire soon while the club is looking to move on both Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

“Experienced Brighton defender Lewis Dunk could be on Manchester United’s radar as an option to bolster their defence in the near future. At 32 years old and with a contract that binds him until 2026, Dunk has caught the eye of the Old Trafford club, who value his experience and leadership in shoring up their defence.

Dunk, the new target

“His knowledge of English football and understanding of the game make him a very attractive profile for Manchester United. Manchester United’s interest in Dunk is a response to the team’s need to add experienced defenders who can offer stability and security to their backline.

“In addition, the possibility of signing him at an affordable price in 2025, when Dunk is already nearing the end of his contract, makes this move an opportunity that the Red Devils are seriously considering. The veteran centre-back could offer Erik ten Hag’s team the reliability that he has shown throughout his long career in the Premier League.”

The only issue is INEOS have been reluctant to add players over a certain age and this signing goes against that philosophy.

For now, the rumor should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt and a clearer picture regarding United’s defensive plans will likely emerge in January.
