Manchester United express unexpected interest in Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras as potential transfer target – Latest news from Old Trafford

Manchester United are reportedly interested in their former academy star Alvaro Carreras, who is raising eyebrows with his performances at Benfica.

In 2024, United seem to have opted a quite ruthless approach when dealing with their academy talents, having taken bold decision to sell many highly-rated stars to strengthen their financial position.

The likes of Hannibal Mejbri, Will Fish, and Willy Kambwala were all shown the exit door this summer. In the January transfer window, United also parted ways with Carreras.

The Spanish left-back, who moved to Manchester from Real Madrid’s academy in 2020, was recalled from his loan at Granada before being loaned out to Benfica in January.

However, United handed the Portuguese outfit a clause to turn the move permanent. Impressed by his development, Benfica swiftly exercised the option, reported to be worth €6m this summer.

The Spain U21s international has enjoyed a strong start to the new season, having established himself as a regular starter under Bruno Lage. He also started in his side’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier this month.

His exploits in Portugal have attracted the interest of United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, reports O Jogo. It is claimed that Carreras is being “closely monitored” by the three European giants.

United continue to deal with an injury crisis at left-back, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still unavailable. This term, Ten Hag has been forced to play right-back Diogo Dalot on the opposite flank.

Madrid and Barca are also searching for future alternatives for the position. Carreras is “well placed to break into” Spain’s senior squad, which has further fuelled interest in his signing.

Interestingly, the outlet claims Benfica and United agreed to include a buy back clause in the deal for the Spaniard.

It will be interesting to see how the Red Devils would use this option to their advantage in the race for the talented player’s signature.

Carreras is apparently not the only Spanish full-back being eyed by the Mancunian giants and Los Blancos. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the two clubs are also following Sevilla talent, Juanlu Sanchez.
