With Manchester United struggling to secure a deal for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, the club is exploring other options in case they are unable to sign their primary target.
Last season, Lisandro Martinez missed 37 games due to multiple injuries, including a recurring issue from his first season at Manchester United.
The club is being cautious with Martinez to prevent another prolonged absence in the upcoming season, learning from the mistakes made in his previous rehabilitation process.
Despite their efforts, Everton has rejected both of United’s bids for the left-footed English international, who excels as a left centre-back despite being right-footed.
United’s Search for a Left-Sided Defender
While Goncalo Inacio was once a target, interest in the Portuguese defender has waned recently. It remains to be seen if the club will revisit their pursuit of Inacio.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United is considering Feyenoord’s Dávid Hancko for the left-sided defender role, although they believe he may be too expensive as a backup player.
The Eredivisie champion primarily plays as a left centre-back but can also fill in at left-back, addressing another position of concern for the English league champions.
Potential Move for Hancko
With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia dealing with injury issues, Hancko could have been a versatile option for Manchester United. However, his current contract with Feyenoord runs until 2028, and his market value is €35 million according to Transfermarkt.
Manchester United may struggle to afford a move for Hancko with other transfer targets already in the pipeline. The player, who prefers a key role at his current club, has been in discussions with Liverpool’s new coach but a move to Merseyside seems unlikely at this point.
