Manchester United persist in pursuit of Atalanta standout Ederson – Latest on Man United’s transfer targets

Manchester United eyeing Atalanta's Ederson after suffering Manuel Ugarte transfer blow - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United remain interested in Atalanta midfielder Ederson, as per reports from Brazil.

During the recently concluded transfer window, United were in the market for a defensive midfielder to potentially replace Casemiro.

The Red Devils’ preferred midfield target was Manuel Ugarte, whom they eventually signed for an initial fee of £42m late in August.

Still, it was not easy for United to find an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain, who tried to recoup all of the €60 million they paid Sporting Lisbon for the Uruguayan in 2023.

The long-drawn negotiations between the two clubs also led to United seeing their name linked with other defensive midfielders, including Ederson.

However, a report from TNT Sports in Brazil (via Sport Witness) claims the Atalanta star is “still in the sights” of United, who are also joined by Newcastle United, Barcelona, and Juventus in the transfer race for the combative midfielder.

Before United finalised terms for Ugarte, it was reported they submitted a €50m bid for the Brazilian.

However, the Serie A outfit decided against selling their midfielder as they were left with limited time to bring in his replacement.

The 25-year-old, known for physicality and ground coverage, is a crucial figure in Gian Piero Gasperini’s setup, having made 53 appearances across all competitions last season.

The “standout” Atalanta star also played an integral role in his side’s Europa League triumph.

Ugarte, who made his full debut for United in their 7-0 win over Barnsley, is expected to cement his place in Ten Hag’s midfield straight away.

Having said that, considering Casemiro and Christian Eriksen’s age, it is not far-fetched to assume the Mancunian giants might explore the possibility of signing Ederson or any other midfielder in the near future.
