Manchester United show interest in ex-Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui – Latest on United’s transfer front

Man United make approach for former Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui - Man United News And Transfer News

Monday’s pages were filled with reports of Manchester United preparing for a huge squad overhaul, with INEOS understood to be open to selling a number of players to improve the club’s financial position this summer.

Such a stance naturally puts question marks on the long-term future of many underperforming players at Man United.

However, United players are not the only ones facing an uncertain future heading into the summer transfer window. Erik ten Hag’s position at the helm is also under threat.

The Dutch coach has simply failed to implement a coherent style of play. If anything, his side appear more disjointed this season than they did during his early days at Old Trafford.

Accordingly, it will not surprise many if he is shown the exit door alongside some high-earning United stars.

Amid this, a number of managers have been linked with the possibility of replacing Ten Hag as United’s manager. Now, Italian media have thrown Julen Lopetegui’s name into the mix.

The former Real Madrid manager, who most recently managed Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been in talks with AC Milan to succeed Stefano Pioli, as per Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness).

The same newspaper adds that while Milan remains an option for Lopetegui, United are also keeping an eye on the situation.

It is understood the Premier League giants have been in touch with the Europa League-winning manager.

As of this moment, their approach has been labelled as ‘tentative’ and it is West Ham who appear to be leading the race, having already made an offer to him.

On the other hand, with INEOS yet to publicly back Ten Hag, the 54-year-old is also starting to attract interest from elsewhere.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Ajax are keen on reuniting with their former manager, who is viewed as their number one choice for the vacant position.

The Amsterdam-based outfit are willing to wait for Ten Hag until the end of this month, as they intend to make an official appointment by June 1st.

Graham Potter is another name on their radar. Interestingly, the former Chelsea boss has also been linked with United. This summer’s managerial merry-go-round is shaping up nicely.
