Marco Silva Faces FA Scrutiny After Criticizing Refereeing in Fulham’s Loss to Manchester United

Fulham’s head coach Marco Silva is in trouble with the Football Association following a heated interview after the team’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Silva expressed his frustration over the officiating during a match that featured five goals, and he could receive a touchline ban for remarks that questioned the integrity of referee John Brooks and the VAR team.

The incident that sparked the controversy occurred early in the first half when United was awarded a penalty for a challenge by Jorge Cuenca on Matheus Cunha. However, after a VAR review, the call was changed to a free-kick just outside the box, leaving Silva irate over the rationale behind the decision.

Silva Criticizes ‘Terrible’ Refereeing Decisions

In an interview with the BBC post-match, Silva did not shy away from his strong opinions, describing the officiating as fundamentally flawed. “The game began with a terrible decision from John Brooks, a completely wrong call,” Silva stated, going on to say, “It was a straightforward tackle on the ball. I realize that VAR has different interpretations, but the penalty was judged on that tackle. No one would give a penalty for a pull.”

Silva further claimed that the match’s refereeing had effectively been altered by the VAR officials, arguing that the explanation given by the fourth official contradicted the final call. “I definitely feel that the game was re-refereed. Initially, there was a terrible decision on what was a clear tackle. The fourth official indicated the referee would review the play, which suggests it was possibly the first instance of a decision being overturned by VAR,” he added.

Silva’s Disciplinary History May Lead to Severe Consequences

The FA is expected to examine Silva’s remarks under Rule E3, which forbids managers from suggesting bias or questioning the honesty of match officials. Unfortunately for Silva, his prior disciplinary record could result in a harsher punishment this time.

In March 2023, he was handed a two-match suspension and fined for comments he made following an FA Cup loss to Manchester United. In December 2023, he received a fine and a warning for his remarks regarding officiating after a match against Newcastle United. Silva’s latest criticism of what he described as “terrible decisions” could mean he is banned to the stands for Fulham’s upcoming games.
