Marrakech | Berrettini comeback remains on course

Matteo Berrettini beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 7-6(5) in the all-Italian quarter final of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakesh to reach his first semi-final on the Tour since Naples in October 2022.

The former world No.6 and Wimbledon finalist saved the only break point he faced in the match and broke in the second game to held on for the first set.

The 27-year-old, up to No. 107 in the current rankings, played aggressively from 5-5 in the second-set tie-break to triumph after one hour and 42-minutes, sealing the victory when Sonego double faulted on match point.

Chasing his eighth tour-level title this week, Berrettini will face Argentina’s Mariano Navone after the seventh seed beat Australia’s Aleksander Vukic 6-4 6-2.

Defending champion, Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena defeated American qualifier Nicolas Moreno de Alboran 6-4 4-6 6-4 to make the other semi-final.

The Spaniard, who earned his 100th tour-level win in his previous match against Britain’s Dan Evans, has won his past eight matches at the clay-court ATP 250 event. He has now reached five tour-level semi-finals and will next meet Pavel Kotov, the world No.68.
