LENS, France — United States winger Timothy Weah exited the match with a potential thigh injury during Marseille’s 2-1 defeat against Lens, where he notably provided his first assist for the Ligue 1 club in the first half.
The Marseille organization has not yet responded to inquiries from The Associated Press regarding the specifics of Weah’s injury.
Weah played a crucial role by assisting Mason Greenwood’s goal in the 17th minute, but was substituted in the 52nd minute, having seemingly injured his left thigh.
After the match, Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi indicated, through a translator, that the injury might not be serious but acknowledged, “it would be very bad news for us if he really hurt himself.”
This summer marked Weah’s return to the French league after a challenging two-year period with Juventus.
His father, George Weah, a former FIFA Player of the Year, spent one season with Marseille 25 years ago at the tail end of his playing career.
Prior to his time at Juventus, Tim Weah played for Lille for four seasons, helping the team secure the Ligue 1 championship in 2021 before his transfer in 2023.
In other Ligue 1 action, defending champions PSG surpassed Marseille, moving one point ahead of Lens at the league summit following a decisive 3-0 victory against Brest on Saturday.
