Andy Murray suffered another opening round loss as he continues his pursuit of the performance he still believes is in him, but the stats are starting to stack against him as he records his sixth successive first round loss and his fourth of the current season. He has in fact won only one of his last 10 matches.
His poor run continued Tuesday when he lost 7-5 6-4 to the Czech, Tomas Machac in the opening round of an ATP 250 event, the Open 13 Provence being held in Marseille, having last week lost at the same stage in Montpellier, to the Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Murray has admitted he is always considering when to retire but the continual question on the subject is starting to irritate him, hence his vey tetchy response last week on Twitter, now known as X, which read: “Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour. I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently. I won’t quit.”
Wimbledon would seem to the most likely place and time for him to retire but as he says, he thinks differently which is why he has the legacy he has, all gained prior to his hip operation.
On this occasion he put up a credible performance but couldn’t take advantage of his opportunities against the Czech, world ranked 66.
Murray recovered from an early break and appeared to have the momentum late in the opening set, only for Machac to break serve at 5-5. The Czech then moved ahead early in the second set leaving the former world No.1 struggling to recover.
In other matches, Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the fifth seed, edged out Frenchman Gregoire Barrere 4-6 6-4 6-4 for the 100th win of his career and America’s Sebastian Korda squeezed past the French qualifier, Hugo Genier 6-3 2-6 7-6(3)
