Manchester United’s topsy-turvy season continued on the weekend as they huffed and puffed to another underwhelming draw, this time against relegation candidates Burnley.
The game followed a familiar script of United being too open, scoring through an opposition error, then collapsing late on to share the spoils.
Erik ten Hag sounded remarkably upbeat after the game, however, as he said his team plays very good football and creates a lot of chances.
He went as far as to compare it to the 2004/05 United team which, for the record, finished third in the league and were managed by a titan of the game who was deserving of all the backing in the world.
It looks like Martin Keown disagrees with Ten Hag too as he has gone off on a remarkable rant on BBC after the manager’s latest comments.
He labelled Ten Hag’s words as “propaganda” and “insulting” to people analyzing the game who can see the problems.
Keown said Ten Hag isn’t “fooling anybody” with his comments and the underwhelming nature of their performances is clear to see.
He said: “It just feels like propaganda. I don’t know what he thinks he is achieving. It was actually a very good game but only because United were very open.
“They’re not convincing performances and he’s not fooling anybody with those comments of his.”
Although Keown is a former rival and an ex-Arsenal player, one would presume he is echoing the thoughts of many United fans at the minute.
Despite the glut of injuries which have undoubtedly had an impact on the team’s performances, the style of play is down to the manager and that has been erratic since the start of the season.
The structural problems haven’t been addressed since the start and the match-going fans loudly booed the team off at full-time after the draw on the weekend.
Ten Hag’s substitutions were also received badly by the fans in the stadium and unless a miracle happens in the remaining four games of the league and an FA Cup trophy is secured, it looks like these are the final words of a man who knows his time is up in the summer.
