Martin Ødegaard, the captain of Arsenal, was observed in a detailed and intense exchange with manager Mikel Arteta after he was substituted during the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Ødegaard made way for Kai Havertz, who subsequently scored the only goal of the match, in the 70th minute.
Before heading to the sidelines, Ødegaard seemed to convey a concern about a physical issue to Arteta, grimacing and pointing at his leg.
According to BBC Sport’s reporter Alex Howell, “Martin Ødegaard has come off and appears to be limping. He received treatment prior to being replaced by Kai Havertz and had an extended conversation with Mikel Arteta before settling on the bench.”
After the match, Arteta mentioned that the substitution was “partly tactical” but also a “precautionary” step due to Ødegaard’s ongoing fitness challenges.
