Messi Shines with Goal and Three Assists, Leading Inter Miami to Eastern Conference Finals
CINCINNATI — Inter Miami’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, commended Luis Suárez for his positive attitude after being benched for the Eastern Conference semifinal victory against FC Cincinnati. Miami secured a dominant 4-0 win, allowing them to advance to the conference finals for the first time in club history.
In Suárez’s absence from the starting lineup, Mateo Silvetti took the forward position and made an impact. This lineup change was initially implemented in the previous match against Nashville, which Suárez missed due to a one-match suspension.
Post-match, Mascherano reflected on the challenging decision to bench Suárez, recognizing his immense value to both the team and the club. “I don’t want to highlight individual players, especially tonight when the team overall excelled. I discussed the decision with Luis during the week, and I appreciate how he responded. His support for his teammates and dedication in training have been exemplary,” Mascherano stated.
Suárez entered the game in the 76th minute, taking the place of Tadeo Allende, who scored twice. Notably, Lionel Messi also contributed significantly, tallying one goal and three assists, further showcasing his playoff prowess. Following Sunday’s performance, Messi set a new record in MLS history for the most goal contributions in a single postseason with 12 (six goals, six assists), surpassing the previous record of 10 held by Ante Razov from 1999.
Mascherano credited the entire roster for the victory, emphasizing the team’s cohesive effort. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance against Cincinnati, affirming that they are on the right path toward contending for the franchise’s inaugural MLS Cup.
“What we saw was in line with our expectations,” Mas commented. “Cincinnati is a formidable opponent, but our team is hitting its stride at just the right moment. With no injuries and our best players available, we’re in a strong position.”
Inter Miami is set to face New York City FC, who triumphed over the Philadelphia Union, in the Eastern Conference final at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 29.
