Mason Greenwood approves of transfer from Man United to Olympique de Marseille

Mason Greenwood gives his approval to agreed transfer from Man United to Olympique de Marseille - Man United News And Transfer News

Mason Greenwood has given his green light to a move to Olympique de Marseille subject to final details.

News broke this evening that Manchester United had accepted Marseille’s €27.6+€4 million offer for Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain.

All that remained was Greenwood’s agreement, which appears to have followed quickly, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who writes:

“Olympique Marseille have Mason Greenwood’s green light to the move as final details of contract/salary are being discussed,” Romano said.

“Manchester United have accepted €30m package offered by OM, including sell-on clause around 40/50%. Final details on player side then done deal.”

United and Greenwood look to have got their wish to find a new club for the 22 year old by the end of this week.

Serie A clubs Juventus and Lazio had appeared to be the front runners to take Greenwood on a permanent deal, but the Turin club cooled their interest, switching to another United star, Jadon Sancho.

Meanwhile Lazio were humiliated when they couldn’t match Marseille’s bid, with president Claudio Lotito trying to save face yesterday by saying he had another candidate who is “ten times the player” that Greenwood is.

Valencia have also been credited with an interest in the player and were at one stage rumoured to have made a £25 million bid themselves, but the Spanish media never really corroborated the claims.

Earlier today, Marseille’s new head coach and former Brighton manager, Roberto de Zerbi, spoke highly of Greenwood, saying: “I don’t know his background. No matter the player… once they sign here, they become like my children. I protect them, always”.

As the move looks to be nearing completion, there has already been a backlash in the French city, with the mayor, Benoit Payan, condemning the acquisition of a player who was charged, but not convicted, with sexual assault and threats to kill.

Public opinion may be the only issue standing in the way of the deal now, with all parties seemingly happy to proceed.
