Masters Update: Victorious Over-70s Excel at Tournament

The clay courts at the Tennis Club d'Antibes, where Canadian Sydney Azancot won two ITF Masters titles in the over 70s.

In the month of September, Canada’s best Masters tennis results came courtesy of a couple of over 70s on the ITF circuit.

Here is the monthly Masters tennis update by Abrysvo.

Over 70s Reign

Of the four titles won by Canadians over the last month on the ITF Tour, three came in the over 70 division.

Sydney Azancot had a strong performance at the MT400 event in Antibes, France, winning both the 70+ singles and doubles titles. Azancot dominated the singles, where he was seeded second, never losing more than two games in a set in four matches. He claimed the title by defeating top seed Gilles Didier of France 6-1, 6-0.

He won the doubles title with Italy’s Oscar Torretta with a near identical scoreline in the final. Azancot and Torretta defeated top seeds Jean Marie Bodin and Pierre Boucher of France 6-0, 6-1.

The singles title was Azancot’s third over but first in a decade. His doubles win, the fourth of his career, was his first since 2017.

Nash Landha was also a winner at a 70+ event, claiming the singles title in Pattaya, Thailand. Landha only had to win one match to claim the title, the 73-year-old’s eighth but first since 2011, beating Belgium’s Jean-Jacques Delporte in the final 6-2, 6-3.

Daniel Larocque was also a winner on the ITF circuit over the last month, winning the 30+ doubles in Chamonix, France with Frenchman Francis Lozneanu. They lost just eight games in their two matches en route to the title.

Kenneth Clarke also reached a final at a MT100 event in Newquay, United Kingdon, upsetting the second seed Adrian Watts in the first round, but was beaten in the title match by top seed Linden Hardisty.

Atlantic Masters

The ITF Masters Tour will pass through Canada for the first time since early August with a stop on the east coast for the Atlantic Masters in Bedford, Nova Scotia just outside of Halifax.

It is an MT100 event that will be played on clay indoors at the Sobeys Atlantic Tennis Centre. The event runs from Oct. 10 to 17.
